Every Sunday, Chinese language chants and lessons resound the rooms of the Chinese Center on Long Island. The Chinese School has been the magnetic force drawing families to the Chinese Center from all over Long Island.
The Chinese School was started in 1967 under the auspices of Cathy Jue, Ann Chan and the late Louise Lee. Blackboards and conference tables were generously donated through the efforts of Ann Chan, Cathy and the late Suey Jue. During the tenure of President Alwin Chan, Li Louie was appointed as the first director. Since then, every year the school has grown, attracting more and more students, young and old alike, who are interested in learning the Chinese language and culture.
On Sundays, during the spring and fall, the Center opens early in the morning, starting with the MANDARIN CLASSES, Under the direction of Co-Principal Lotus Luo and Donna Chan. The kindergarten class enrolls students as young as four years old. These young students attend class side by side with their parents to learn and reinforce the language. Now including the Preschool language class.
The CANTONESE CLASSES are also held on Sundays in the afternoon. There are three levels of Cantonese classes where reading and writing are taught: Beginner, Intermediate and Advance.
